Deterministic matching

Definition

Deterministic matching is a way of linking customer records that treats two records as the same person only when they share an exact identifier, such as the same email address, phone number or customer ID. It is very accurate but misses people whose details don’t line up exactly.

What it means for a dealership

In a dealership, deterministic matching is how a CRM knows that the shopper who just submitted a lead is the same person who bought from the store three years ago with the same email address. Because the rules are strict, false matches are rare.

The weakness is coverage. People use several emails, change phone numbers and move, and old DMS records hold outdated details. A typo or a missing field breaks the match. Data hygiene helps: standardizing names and addresses, updating contact details and merging duplicates lets more records match exactly.

Customer list uploads to ad platforms work the same way. When a dealer uploads hashed emails and phone numbers, the platform matches them exactly to its own users, so the cleaner the list, the higher the match rate.
